what I would like to see is the casinos (which themselves have taken a big hit of course) pitching in some big dollars to help their neighbors. perhaps they could prove themselves to be more than a blight on our society.

What exactly is sweet and thoughtful about it? That Wal-Mart had to close stores, that big corporations are donating money for relief, that it might be an economic boost for some people?
Don't fall prey to the "Broken Window Fallacy." Whatever economic benefits come from this disaster are greatly outweighed by long term costs (not to mention the lives of those who are forever affected).
Frankly, as someone who has family and friends deeply affected by this storm I'm offended by the way you've chosen to post the link to this article. There is nothing cute about it.

It seems to me that with cleanup costs in the billions of dollars, just a $1 million donation is like throwing a dime at someone who needs $100. Small change, and almost an insult.

Whoa! I was poking fun at walmut saying Katrina had a sweet side since it seemed all we saw was the her (katrina's) wrath. the sweet side of the wrath was that walmart had to close so many stores. get it? that was all. I didn't mean to make light of the disaster, really. I was making fun of walmart... but it was too soon to make any joke since so many people that we know and don't know are devastated.... have a nice day, seriously.
